SCHOOL OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES / TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING

History

The English translation and interpreting department is to welcome students for the first time in 2022-2023 academic year.


Qualification Awarded

Graduates who complete the 4 year undergraduate programme successfully are awarded a BA in Translation and Interpretation Studies and qualify as translators and interpreters.

Specific Arrangement For Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of previous formal (formal) learning in Turkish Higher Education Institutions, vertical, horizontal and internal contradictions within the university "TRANSFER BETWEEN ASSOCIATE AND UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS, DOUBLE MAJOR, SUB-BRANCH AND INTERSTITUTIONAL CREDIT STRUCTURES IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS. It is carried out within the scope of "REGULATION". In Turkey, the recognition process of non-formal certificate-based or experience-based (in-formal and non-formal) learning is still in its infancy, except for formal education institutions. Exemption exams are held at the beginning of each academic term for courses such as Computer and English and German included in the education plans of the programs. Students who think that they meet the expected qualifications from these courses have the right to take the exams. Students who pass the exam and pass the exam are exempted from the relevant courses in the curriculum.


Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).


Profile of The Programme

The four-year English-Translation and Interpretation undergraduate program is based on interaction with different disciplines due to the interdisciplinary nature of translation studies research and application areas. Necessary courses are included in the program for the development of students in a way that meets the expectations of the sector.

Graduates of the Department of Translation and Interpretation have job opportunities in various public institutions (TRT, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of National Education, etc.), publishing houses, magazines, newspapers, film studios and international organizations. In addition, graduates who have completed their education in the field of interpreting can work as conference interpreters in the sector if they specialize in fields such as medical, automotive and legal translation. Those who have a pedagogical certificate can become a teacher. Translators can create their own working areas by opening a private office.


Access to Further Studies

Candidates who have successfully completed their undergraduate education can study in graduate programs in their field or related fields, provided that they get a valid grade from the ALES exam and have sufficient English language knowledge.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

For Assessment and Evaluation, one midterm (40%) and one final (60%) are given for each semester course. In addition, in-class studies, presentations, assignments and projects constitute the basic evaluation tools.

Facilities

Three assisstant professors work in the department. In addition, course support is received from the instructors of the School of Foreign Languages when necessary. Oral and written translation courses are offered within the department.
