Objectives of the Course | |||||
The aim of this course is to introduce from the social, political and cultural perspective culture and art in the Early Christian Late Antique period (3th-5th cent.) an era of profound transformation and transition from the Pagan Antiquity to the Christian Middle Ages. Polytheism religious/belief systems and mystery cults, the advent of Christianity and the art and architecture will be examined within the process of social change. |

LO-1 | Gets familiar with the origin and the process of formation of the Byzantine art; understands the repercussion of the changing social and cultural structure on the artistic production; can explain the characteristics of the transformation on the process of the christianization of the artistic production took form within the pagan beliefs. |
PO-1 Having theoretical and practical knowledges in Art History PO-2 Acquiring ability on data collection, analyzing, interpreting, discussing and proposing about the issues of the History of Art. PO-4 Acquiring objective and consistent interpreting skill via comparing art and architecture products in different geographies. |

LO-2 | Comprehends the advent and spread of the Christianity and the differentiation in the artistic production which gives the main character to the Byzatine art. Learns about early christian cities and Istanbul’s urban structure. Identifies Early Christian painting, sculpture and relief art works. |
PO-5 Having ability on semtinizing and evaluating the effects of materials, manufacturing technique, designing, political, social, economical, and ideological factors on production and progress of art and arhictecture products. Late Antique and Early Christian period (3th-5th cent.): geography in general terms, historical and cultural framework and principal notions .The rise of Christianity and its relationship with the other belief systems. Art before the Emperor Constantine: catacombs, sarcophagi, Cleveland statues, domus ecclesia (Dura Europos). Pilgrimage destinations, traveler accounts, related minor art Works (Eulogiae, Ampullae). Religious and secular buildings and their decorative programs. | ||
