Objectives of the Course
This course aims to provide students' fundamental reading skills with particular attention on vocabulary development, understanding denotation and connotation, making inferences and judgments, reading comprehension, fluency and interpretation. In addition, the course fosters skills of scanning, skimming and prediction through extensive reading. Crucial analysis skills in relationship to various texts will be introduced.

LO-1 analyze different types of paragraphs to evaluate texts in terms of organization, integrity and content. PO-15 To be able to have knowledge of the terminology of various fields (Science, Social and Health Sciences etc.) and being able to use second foreign language and English both as a source and a target language

1 Explaining course objectives and contents and expectations from students; giving information about how students will be evaluated, lessons will be taught, what material will be used; how students will study and get prepared for lessons Discussion and Lecture
2 Describing the function of scanning and identifying what points should be considered while scanning a text, practising with some model texts. Discussing the importance of previewing and predicting the topic of a text. Emphasising the points to preview a text and its difference from prediction. Discussion and Lecture
3 To discuss the role of vocabulary knowledge for effective reading, to explain various ways such as guessing, using grammar or signal words etc. to cope with unknown words found in the context. Discussion and Lecture
