Objectives of the Course
The aim of this course is to give the students a general idea of the most important literary works set in Britain from Old English Period to the Early Seventeenth Century and to familiarize them main literary genres and conventions through the study of extracts from the original texts as well as with the different periods of British culture and history. It is planned that the cultural atmosphere in Britain until the 17th century will be introduced to the students through such literary texts as epic, religious texts, poems, prose and dramatic texts.

The students who succeeded in this course:
LO-1 can explain various periods of English literature with its outlines. PO-1 They acquire knowledge and skills about English grammar, English culture, English literature, the structure and education of the English language.
PO-10 They gain proficiency in reading and interpreting English texts.
PO-13 In addition to information about the English language, literature, culture, society and history, the student can gain the ability to collect current issues and information about England from English sources and share them with the relevant person, institution and organization.
PO-17 They gain awareness about looking at their own nation objectively by using knowledge in English language, literature and culture.
PO-24 They gain knowledge about the process and development of English literature from its beginning to the present day.
Examination
LO-2 can explain literary works belonging to Old English Literature. PO-1 They acquire knowledge and skills about English grammar, English culture, English literature, the structure and education of the English language.
PO-8 They can participate in various social, cultural and artistic activities in the field of English and British culture and add new values to society based on the inferences they obtain as a result of these participations.
PO-9 They conduct research and analysis in the field of English language, literature, culture and history.
PO-10 They gain proficiency in reading and interpreting English texts.
PO-13 In addition to information about the English language, literature, culture, society and history, the student can gain the ability to collect current issues and information about England from English sources and share them with the relevant person, institution and organization.

Course Contents
In this course, literary texts from the Anglo-Saxon period, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance are examined. Within this context, the course discusses how Early English Literature reflects Anglo-Saxon culture, the characteristics of religious texts and plays from Medieval English Literature, and the main features of various poems and theater plays written during the Renaissance period.
