FACULTY OF EDUCATION / PROGRAM OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

History

Nevsehir Haci Bektas Veli University, Faculty of Education, Program of English Language Teaching was founded in accordance with Articles 7/d-2 of Law No. 2880, as amended by Law No. 2547 in 2011. The language of instruction is 30 percent English.


Qualification Awarded

Students are awarded a bachelor's diploma in ELT.

Bachelor's degree


Specific Admission Requirements

The Program in Teaching English as a Foreign Language offers an undergraduate program. Students who enrolled in this program take a language proficiency exam and if their language level is below the required level, they follow the preparatory language program for the first year.


Specific Arrangement For Recognition of Prior Learning

English language preparatory school is mandatory in this program. The exemption policy is applied based on the English Preparation School regulations.


Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students are required to successfully complete the designated program of courses meet a minimum of 240 ECTS credit requirement and have a minimum GPA of 2.00/4.00


Profile of The Programme

The Department of English Language Teaching at Nevsehir Haci Bektas Veli University offers a comprehensive training program on English and train English teachers who are equipped with contemporary knowledge and teaching skills. In line with this perspective, the program aims to train English teachers who: - are conscious, responsible, and guided by modern principles of education, - are armed with the skills used in contemporary education, and - have acquired the ability to design lessons that are compatible with technological changes.

PO-1 Defines the basic concepts and principles of assessment and evaluation, and applies this knowledge in school settings.
PO-2 Defines the basic concepts and principles of scientific research.
PO-3 Discusses the appropriate methods for the production of scientific knowledge and demonstrates the ability to choose the appropriate methods for their goals and objectives.
PO-4 Interprets the English course curriculum and develops appropriate daily lesson plans.
PO-5 Designs, implements and evaluates instructional materials, technology, media, and other resources by using the principles of instructional technologies.
PO-6 Defines the concepts and principles of theoretical and applied linguistics and applies them by associating with language teaching theories.
PO-7 Defines foreign language teaching approaches and methods and applies these methods effectively in all aspects of language: speaking, listening, reading and writing.
PO-8 Analyzes and evaluates their own and peers' teaching practices.
PO-9 Defines the basic principles of teaching English to young learners (TEYL) and implements appropriate approaches and techniques in the classroom environment.
PO-10 Analyzes and evaluates materials suitable for different age groups and uses them in accordance with the curriculum.
PO-11 Applies appropriate methods and techniques by collaborating for the development of critical thinking, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills.
PO-12 Analyzes language acquisition theories and applies this knowledge to improve language teaching methods and practices.
PO-13 Defines the basic literary concepts and principles, applies these concepts and principles in the field of foreign language teaching.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Students who graduate from our department can work as English teachers in primary and secondary schools and private teaching institutions affiliated with private and state institutions and organizations. They can also work as lecturers in the school of foreign languages at universities. Those who want to pursue their academic careers can work as research assistants in the Departments of English Language Teaching, English Language and Literature, American Culture and Literature, and Translation and Interpreting. In addition, our students have the opportunity to find a job in companies that offer professional translation services, and the relevant departments of business fields that require foreign languages, such as public relations.


Access to Further Studies

Students can apply to master's or doctorate programs in any field or proficiency in social sciences.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Each student must register for the courses at the beginning of the semester. Students must have attended at least 70% of the courses and 80% of the practices to participate in the final examination. Students are subjected to at least one mid-term examination and the final examination for each course. The mid-term examinations’ (assessment methods like assignments, quizzes, etc. can be calculated as mid-term grades) contribution to the final grade is 40% and the final exam counts for 60% of the final grade. Students are given a letter grade for each course at the end of the semester they are registered. The students have to get grades such as (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB), or (CC) to complete a course successfully. If a course is completed with the letter grade (DC) or (DD), the Cumulative Grade Point Average must be at least 2,00.


Graduation Requirements

A student must provide a minimum of 240 ECTS credits and a GPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00.

Facilities

In the Program of English language Teaching, all teaching and research activities are conducted with 2 Associate Professors, 2 Assistant Professors, 1 Lecturer, and 1 Research Assistant (July 2022). Lecturers from other faculties also teach in our department. Courses are performed in classrooms with projectors and have the capacity of 40 students.
