FACULTY OF EDUCATION / SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHING

History

Nevsehir Haci Bektas Veli University Faculty of Education, Department of Turkish and Social Sciences Education, Social Studies Education Programme was founded in accordance with the Articles 7/d-2 of the Law No. 2880, as amended by Law No.2547. Medium of instruction is Turkish.


Qualification Awarded

The Bachelor's Degree in Social Studies Teaching is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.


Level of Qualification

Bachelor's degree


Specific Admission Requirements

High school graduate students who want to study at universities in the Republic of Turkey are required to get enough test scores from the YKS (Higher Education Examination). Placements are made by ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement Center) according to the preferences of the students. Students who gain the right to register can register between the dates specified by providing the documents announced on the university homepage. For the foreign students, the criteria of OSYM and of the quota that the university determined are taken into consideration.


Specific Arrangement For Recognition of Prior Learning

Students can be exempted from these courses if they have taken courses that are similar in name and content to the courses in the undergraduate program while they are studying in associate or undergraduate programs in Turkey in the last three years.


Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In order to obtain a bachelor's degree in the Programme, students must accomplish all compulsory and elective courses, a total of 240 ECTS, and have a grade point average of at least 2.0 out of 4.00.


Profile of The Programme

The Department of Social Studies Education provides education in order to train social studies teachers who have humane and moral values, think, research, examine, are creative, science and technology literate, and can use modern education and teaching techniques.

PO-1 Uses teaching strategies, methods and techniques, assessment and evaluation instruments, taking into account the learning outcomes, by adapting them to student development characteristics, individual differences and needs.

PO-6 Makes planning, arrangement and evaluation in accordance with educational objectives and student needs in the light of social sciences and findings, theory and practice information related to social studies education produced by social sciences.

PO-8 Participates in professional and social projects and activities, plans out and implements projects and activities for the social environment in which he or she lives, with a sense of social responsibility.
PO-9 Uses knowledge and skills, which he or she evaluates with a critical approach, to solve the problems he or she encounters in the his or her field and social life as an effective citizen who makes well reasoned decisions.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of this department appointed by the Ministry of National Education as a social studies teacher on condition that obtaining the required score from Public Personnel Selection Examination (KPSS), and teach at universities, private schools or other private teaching institutions.


Access to Further Studies

Graduates of this department may continue with master and doctoral studies, provided that they get a required score in Academic Staff and Graduate Study Education Exam (ALES) and a sufficient level of English language proficiency.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Each student must register in the beginning of each semester and in order to participate in the final examination, students must have attended at least 70 % of the courses and 80 % of the practices. The students are subjected at least to one mid-term examination and the final examination for each course. The mid-term examination’s (assessment methods like assignments, quizzes, etc. can be calculated as mid-term grade) contribution to the final grade is 40 % and final examination counts for 60 % of the final grade. The students have to get grades such as (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB) and (CC) in order to be successful. (DC) and (DD) grades are conditional success grades. It means that if a student has these grades for some courses, he has to get at least 2.0 GPA so that he will be successful in the mentioned courses.


Graduation Requirements

To successfully complete all courses available in program (total of 240 ECTS). To obtain at least 2.0 GPA of 4.00.

Facilities

In the Department of Social Studies Education, research and education activities are carried out with 2 professor, 2 assistant professor and 2 research assistants (2022, August). Besides, lecturers from other faculties also teach in our department. Courses are performed in classrooms having the capacity of 45 students with smart boards/projectors.
