FACULTY OF LETTERS & SCIENCE / SOCIOLOGY

History

Nevşehir University Arts& Science Faculty Department of Sociology was established in 2007. It is the first Sociology Department among the universities which were built after 2003.


Qualification Awarded

Students who have accomplished all the courses (equal to 240 ECTS) and have a weighted average of at least 2.0 out of 4.00 are awarded an undergraduate diploma in Sociology .

Specific Admission Requirements

It is necessary that students pass the ÖSS exam (Student Selection Examination). The students make choices to be admitted to the programs they want to attend and send their preference form to ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement Center). ÖSYM takes all the applications lists the scores the students have received from highest to lowest and announces the current programs according to the scores placing the students in the programs they have preferred. On the other hand, foreign national students are placed in the universities across Turkey as per the scores they received on the central exam named YÖS (Foreign Student Exam) Documents required for registration: 1- Diplomas of High Schools and their equivalents 2- The Result of Student Placement Exam by ÖSYM


Specific Arrangement For Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning in Turkish higher education institutions are still in progress. Therefore, recognition of prior learning in Nevşehir University has not been fully accomplished. However, exemption exams from such lessons as Computer Sciences and English are held at the beginning of every academic year. Students who consider themselves capable of meeting the learning outcomes of such lessons are welcome to take the exemption test. Those who have passed the exemption test are exempt from the relevant lesson.

Profile of The Programme

Nevşehir University Arts& Science Faculty Department of Sociology was established in 2007. It is the first Sociology Department among the universities which were built after 2003. Sociology’s importance and function does not come from the only being the basic science. Because of realities such as globalism and terror that change world’s face, sociology became more crucial. This significance made the department the first about recruiting teachers. It has a special status both in university and faculty. In the years, 2009-2010 no undergraduate students could be admitted. Now there are two different kinds of graduate schools, and one of them is Deficiency Program. Ass. Prof. Hasan Yavuzer, Dr. Hulusi Yılmaz and Vedat Celebi are the Faculty.


Key Learning Outcomes of the Programme

PO-1 1. Can understand the basic concepts regarding the sociology programs.
PO-2 2.Can transfer and adapt what they have acquired in the field of Sociology to other disciplines.
PO-3 3. Can develop creative, resourceful in terms of conducting sociological analysis and equipped with the communication and social skills necessary to take part in team work.
PO-4 4. Can have the skills to define, model and solve the sociological problems in the field of Sociology and related fields.
PO-5 5. Can dedicate to improve themselves by keeping abreast of the developments in science, technology and modern topics.
PO-6 6. Can assess and evaluate the data making use of the advanced knowledge and skills that they have acquired in the field, to define and analyze the issues connected with current technological developments finding ways to offer solutions to those issues based on the researched and evidence.
PO-7 7. Can use the modern techniques and devices necessary for the current practices in the field of Sociology.
PO-8 8. Can collaborate both intra- and interdisciplinarily by planning and managing the activities regarding the development of the members subordinate to them.
PO-9 9. Are able to express themselves in verbal and written communication having the ability to work individually, take initiatives and make their own decisions.
PO-10 10. Can have the professional and ethical responsibility in the process of the collection, evaluation and implementation of the data in the field of study and publishing the results.
PO-11 11. Can observe the current national and international issues.
PO-12 12. Can make their knowledge regarding human health and environmental awareness available for the benefit of the society.
PO-13 13. Can know at least one foreign language at B1 level in the European Language Portfolio so that they can follow the developments in their field of study and exchange information or ideas with their colleagues abroad.
PO-14 14. Can use the information and communication technology required by the field of Sociology with a competence at the level of European Computer Driving License.
PO-15 15. Can aware of the universal nature of social rights, justice, quality management, protection of cultural values and environment as well as occupational health and safety.

NQF-HETR Program Outcomes Matrices

It is possible for the students who have graduated from our department to be employed in: - Universities - Public and private institutions - Private sectors - Research centers and institutes, TÜBİTAK, DPT and DSİ (State Hydraulic Works), Municipalities - Schools as teachers (if they have received pedagogical formation) The graduates of this program are also appointed as civil servants in public institutions provided they have received the necessary score on KPSS (Public Personnel Selection Examination)


Access to Further Studies

The students who have successfully completed their undergraduate studies, can follow their graduate studies further provided they have got the necessary score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam)) and a fair knowledge of English.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

It is necessary that every student enroll in the courses at the beginning of each term. They have to attend 70 % of the theoretical courses and 80 % of the practical courses in order to take the final exam. They are required to take at least 1 mid-term exam and a final exam for each lesson. The midterm exam (It is also possible to add the marks that students get from homework, quizzes, laboratory to the midterm exam result) contributes 40 % while the final has a share of 60 % on the pass mark. All of the exams are scored on a 100 scale. Students have to get at least 45 points on the final exam. They are considered successful in a lesson provided that they have got (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB) or (CC). Students with (DC) or (DD) scores are also considered successful on condition that they have a grade point average of at least 2.00.


Graduation Requirements

Students have to pass all the lessons in the course (240 ECTS credits), get a weighed grade point average of 2.00 out of 4.00 and complete their thesis in order to accomplish the program.
