FACULTY OF LETTERS & SCIENCE / CONTEMPORARY TURKISH DIALECTS

History

The Faculty of Science and Letters of Nevşehir Hadji Bektash Veli University was founded on May, 17, 2007 based on the law code 5662. The Department aims to make a mutual contribution among the Turkish Communities and States on literary, financial and socio-cultural terms by the prospective graduates of the department who are required to make an exploration into the language, literature and culture of the Turkish nation on a widespread field. Moreover, it aims to train scientists who will produce works in the field of study. It offers courses in Turkish.


Qualification Awarded

Students who have accomplished all the courses (equal to 240 ECTS) and have a weighted average of at least 2.0 out of 4.00 are awarded an undergraduate diploma in the Modern Turkish Dialects & Literature Department.

Specific Admission Requirements

It is necessary that students pass the ÖSS exam (Student Selection Examination). The students make choices to be admitted to the programs they want to attend and send their preference form to ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement Center). ÖSYM takes all the applications lists the scores the students have received from highest to lowest and announces the current programs according to the scores placing the students in the programs they have preferred. On the other hand, foreign national students are placed in the universities across Turkey as per the scores they received on the central exam named YÖS (Foreign Student Exam) Documents required for registration: 1-Diplomas of High Schools and their equivalents The Result of Student Placement Exam by ÖSYM


Specific Arrangement For Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning in Turkish higher education institutions are still in progress. Therefore, recognition of prior learning in Nevşehir Hadji Bektash Veli University has not been fully accomplished. However, exemption exams from such lessons as Computer Sciences and English are held at the beginning of every academic year. Students who consider themselves capable of meeting the learning outcomes of such lessons are welcome to take the exemption test. Those who have passed the exemption test are exempt from the relevant lesson.

Profile of The Programme

The department mainly aims to: - teach the students the Modern Turkish Dialects and 4 sub-departments (Southwest, Northwest, Southeast and Northeast dialects) - introduce the students to the works of literature of these dialects - encourage the students to follow their studies further and make their living as a researcher in the field of study - The dialects to be taught in the 4 sub-departments are as follows: 1- Southwest: Azerbaijani, Turkmen, Gagauz, Halac and Khorassan Dialects 2- Southeast: Uzbek , Uyghur, Salar and Sari Uyghur Dialects 3- Northwest: Tatar, Bashkortostan, Kazakh, Kırghiz, Karaçay-Malkar, Kumuk, Nogay and Karayim Dialects 4- Northeast: Altay, Tuva, Hakas, Saha and Şor Dialects The undergraduate program takes 4 years to complete.


Key Learning Outcomes of the Programme

PO-1 Identifying Turkology concept, and explaining its features and historical development.
PO-2 Knowing historical development of geographical borders of Turkic World concept, and having information about histories, present-day situations of communities constituting Turkic World, and socio-cultural relationships of these.
PO-3 Knowing language concept in every aspect, recognizing methods and disciplines (linguistics, grammar, philology) of the language, and can to examine Turkish language by contemporary linguistics data.
PO-4 Recognizing dialect groups and literatures of contemporary Turkic World, which are classified as southwestern, southeastern, northwestern and northeasthern by directions, and knowing distinctive features of these groups in terms of language and literature.
PO-5 Knowing chronologically and, with works, of history of Turkish language, and its periods from the first written documents to the emergence of contemporary Turkic dialects and to their present-day situation.
PO-6 Can to read, explain, and examine linguistically texts which had been written in different alphabets (Gokturk, Uighur, Arabic et al.) in Historical Turkic dialects.
PO-7 Can to read, explain and examine linguistically texts which had been written in different alphabets (Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic et al.) in Contemporary Turkic dialects.
PO-8 Having information about accents of Comtemporary Turkic dialects, and can to read, explain and examine lunguistically texts which are compiled from these accents or which are made by these accents.
PO-9 Can to transfer amongst Contemporary Turkic dialects.
PO-10 Knowing works and authors belonging to historical periods of Contemporary Turkic dialects and literatures, and examining, interpreting these texts, and can to discuss by comparing these.
PO-11 Knowing works and authors beloning to Contemporary Turkic literatures and examining, interpreting these texts, and can to discuss by comparing these.
PO-12 Having necessary information, knowledge and sensitivity about subjects with respect to cultural values and folk-literature products, which are possessed by Turkic tribes.
PO-13 Following developments with regard to his/her field, determining problems, gathering necessary data for solving these problems, interpreting results according to these data, and making contribution to occupational subjects by sharing studies which he/she did with the relevant persons, institutions and organizations, when required.

It is possible for the students who have graduated from our department to be employed in: - Public and private schools under the Ministry of National Education as teachers of Turkish Language & Literature as well as Turkish teachers. - Atatürk Culture Center and Turkish Language Association as speacialists and assistant specialists - Turkish Radio & Television Corporation - Universities in Turkey and those in Turkic Communities as researchers The students who have completed their studies in the department are awarded the title of “Turkologist”.


Access to Further Studies

The students who have successfully completed their undergraduate studies, can follow their graduate studies further provided they have got the necessary score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam)) and a fair knowledge of English and Russian.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

It is necessary that every student enroll in the courses at the beginning of each term. They have to attend 70 % of the theoretical courses and 80 % of the practical courses in order to take the final exam. They are required to take at least 1 mid-term exam and a final exam for each lesson. The midterm exam (It is also possible to add the marks that students get from homework, quizzes, laboratory to the midterm exam result) contributes 40 % while the final has a share of 60 % on the pass mark. All of the exams are scored on a 100 scale. Students have to get at least 45 points on the final exam. They are considered successful in a lesson provided that they have got (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB) or (CC). Students with (DC) or (DD) scores are also considered successful on condition that they have a grade point average of at least 2.00.


Graduation Requirements

Students have to pass all the lessons in the course (240 ECTS credits), get a weighed grade point average of 2.00 out of 4.00 and complete their thesis in order to accomplish the program.
